What do these signs mean?
1
Fatha is a small slanted line that can be found on top of any single arabic letter. The sign indicates the changing of the sound of the letter and pronouncing it with an 'a' sound.
2
Kasra is a small slanted line that can be found underneath any single arabic letter. The sign indicates the changing of the sound of the letter and pronouncing it with an 'ee' sound.
3
Dhamma is a small slanted line with a curl at the beginning that can be found on top of any single arabic letter. It looks similar to the Arabic letter 'Waaw'. The sign indicates the changing of the sound of the letter and pronouncing it with an 'oo' sound.
Within the Arabic Alphabhet there are three signs that can be added to each letter. These signs are called fatha, kasrah and dammah. They represent the sounds 'a', 'i' and 'u' of the English alphabet. This will mean the way each letter is pronounced is changed. For example, if a fatha is added to the letter 'Baa' it becomes 'Ba' - like the phonic sound of 'B' in English.
